Moving Day Countdown
Every family schedule will be different, but here is a proven timetable to make moving day Mission Possible!
Moving Day Minus Six Weeks
Make a list of needed address changes and check them off as you nofity
Get change of address forms from the Post Office
Change magazine and other computer-generated addressed mail
Start a file of important papers (an accordion file works well)
Take inventory of your frozen foods and begin using them
Moving Day Minus Five Weeks
Begin work on the packing and loading dates with the moving company
Start sorting and decide what to take, sell, discard or give away
Moving Day Minus Four Weeks
Review all personal business accounts
Bank accounts, charge accounts, credit cards
Utilities and telephone services
Memberships in social clubs
Insurance
Safe deposit box
Any legal or financial matters
Leased products or services
An accompanying partner should get letters of reference for job finding
Talk with your veterinarian about your pet records and any treatments needed
Moving Day Minus Three Weeks
Ask physicians and dentists for records and a referral in your new city
Fill regular prescriptions and get a copy for your new physician or pharmacy
Drop off (and remember to pick up!) dry cleaning
Pick up anything being repaired or serviced
Moving Day Minus Two Weeks
Check your address change list – make sure everyone is notified
If driving to your new city, make sure your car is serviced and ready for the trip
Collect children’s games or activities for the final trip Moving Day Minus One Week
Return borrowed items (library) and collect anything borrowed from you
Cancel newspaper delivery
Plan meals and snacks that are quick to fix
Make arrangements for your pets on packing and loading day
Empty oil and gas from lawnmower and other equipment
Clean deep freeze and dry completely Moving Day Minus One Day
Clean refrigerator and dry completely
Empty safe deposit box
Consider cashier’s check to open a new checking account
Pack personal belongings for the final trip
Pack a CARE carton of essentials (coffee pot, filter and coffee, and any other “open first” items)
Load whatever you can into the car to make more room in your home Moving Day
Remove bedding linens
Load last minute items in the car
Be available for the movers
Give the movers a map and clear directions to your new home
Check rooms, cabinets, closets, drawers and appliances for any stray items
Sweep and vacuum floors (borrow the neighbor’s vacuum)
Leave appliance manuals for the new owner |
